You can now start buying crypto without ever leaving a ChatGPT conversation. But there is an important catch, and it is worth understanding before you tap "buy."

In May 2026, the payments company MoonPay launched an app inside ChatGPT that lets you begin a crypto purchase right from a chat. It was the first crypto on-ramp built into OpenAI's chatbot. Here is what that really means, in plain terms.

First, what is an "on-ramp"?#

An on-ramp is simply a service that turns regular money, like dollars from your card or bank, into cryptocurrency. It is the bridge between the normal financial world and crypto.

MoonPay is one of the best-known on-ramp providers. Its new ChatGPT app brings that bridge into a place millions of people already use every day.

How it works#

The process is designed to feel like a normal conversation:

You find and connect the MoonPay app inside ChatGPT's app store. You ask about a coin and say how much you want, for example, "buy $100 of Bitcoin." ChatGPT, through the MoonPay app, creates a checkout link for you. You click that link, which takes you to MoonPay's own website. There, you finish the purchase: verify your identity if it is your first time, choose how to pay, and enter the wallet address where the crypto should land.

That is the key point. The conversation starts in ChatGPT, but the actual buying happens on MoonPay.

What ChatGPT does not do#

This is the part people misunderstand, so it is worth being clear.

ChatGPT does not sell, hold, or move your crypto. It is not an exchange, a broker, a wallet, or a payment processor. Your coins never sit in some "ChatGPT account," because no such thing exists.

All the regulated, sensitive parts of the process, including your payment, your identity check, and delivering the crypto to your wallet, are handled by MoonPay, not by ChatGPT or OpenAI. ChatGPT is really just the starting point and the guide.

MoonPay describes the app as being like a helper that sits beside you, explaining the asset you are looking at rather than telling you what to buy.

What you can buy, and where#

At launch, the app supported major coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and the USDC stablecoin, plus more than 100 other assets across over 30 blockchains.

It is available in a large number of countries, with payment options such as debit or credit card, Apple Pay, and bank transfer. Exactly what you can buy and how you can pay may depend on where you live.

What to check before you buy#

Buying crypto through ChatGPT is still buying crypto. The same basic checks apply as with any on-ramp:

1. Fees. Review the total cost at checkout, including any on-ramp fee, before you confirm.

2. The network. Make sure you are receiving the coin on the correct blockchain. Your wallet address. Double-check it carefully. Crypto sent to the wrong address is usually gone for good.

3. Regional access. Some coins or payment methods may not be available in your country.

It is also worth knowing that starting inside ChatGPT does not automatically make a purchase cheaper or safer than using another on-ramp. It mainly changes where the journey begins.

Final Thoughts#

The bigger story here is not really about one app. It is about where people now make financial decisions.

More and more people research coins, compare prices, and ask questions inside AI chatbots. Placing a buy button at the end of that research meets them exactly where they already are. If it works well, expect other financial services to follow the same path into AI tools.

For now, though, the simplest way to think about it is this: ChatGPT can help you begin, but MoonPay still does the actual work.
