Bitcoin trades near $65,300 heading into August, and the data tells two opposite stories. July is closing up about 11.5%, the third straight green July. But August is Bitcoin's worst month on record, and the largest holders are buying into it anyway. Here are the numbers that matter.

July's strength versus August's record#

July's 11.5% gain stands out because June fell 20.5%. Bitcoin has now closed July in the green three years running, one of its more reliable seasonal patterns.

August is the opposite. BTC has finished the month red for four straight years, from 2022 through 2025, with drops ranging from 13% to 25%. Zoom out to 13 years of data and the bias holds: August has closed lower in 9 of them, with an average return of about -3.08% and a median of -7.49%. Only three Augusts since 2013, in 2013, 2020, and 2021, finished higher. The seasonal edge is real, but roughly one in four Augusts still closes green, so it is a lean, not a lock.

The whale accumulation, by the numbers#

Here is the counter-signal. Over the past month, Bitcoin whales accumulated roughly 270,000 BTC while smaller holders sold.

The on-chain split is sharp. Wallets holding 1,000 to 10,000 BTC added about 66,700 BTC over 60 days, while mid-sized wallets of 100 to 1,000 BTC offloaded around 77,800 BTC in the same window. One tracked transfer moved 1,172 BTC, worth about $75 million, off Coinbase and into cold storage. As a result, the amount of Bitcoin held on exchanges has fallen to a seven-year low.

That last point matters most. Coins usually leave exchanges when investors intend to hold, not sell, and this kind of accumulation during a dip has often preceded major rallies.

The bearish chart#

The technicals cut the other way. Bitcoin has formed a head-and-shoulders pattern, a shape traders read as a potential top. A break below the neckline near $60,965 would project a measured move toward roughly $41,266.

The caveat is important: these patterns fail often, and a slide of that size would need a fresh negative catalyst the market does not currently have. A reclaim of $82,931 would cancel the bearish structure outright, which for now looks as unlikely as the downside target.

Cooling ETF demand#

Another pressure point: the spot Bitcoin ETFs that drove much of 2026's buying have slowed. Daily inflows have shrunk in recent sessions, with some days flipping to outflows. Less institutional demand means less steady support under the price.

The levels that matter#

The key ceiling is $68,000. That is where June's rally collapsed, and it sits near the average cost basis of everyone who bought BTC over the past five months. Clearing it, especially with returning ETF inflows and a friendlier Fed, opens a path toward $75,000 to $80,000. A reclaim of $70,000 would sharply weaken the seasonal bear case.

The floor is $60,965. Hold it, and August stays range-bound. Lose it, and the head-and-shoulders target near $41,000 comes into play. For reference, Bitcoin's realized price, the network-wide average cost basis, sits near $53,000.

The bottom line

August 2026 stacks three bearish forces- a losing seasonal record, a head-and-shoulders pattern, and cooling ETF flows, against one bullish one: whales adding 270,000 BTC while exchange supply hits a seven-year low. The base case is a range-bound month between $60,965 and $68,000, with the trend only turning clearly bullish above $68,000 or clearly bearish below $60,965. The heavy whale accumulation suggests deeper dips may be bought, but as the seasonal record shows, the edge is not a guarantee.
